Why Does Menopause Happen?
How declining egg numbers and changing hormone levels lead to menopause
Duration: 41 seconds
Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have.
Over time, the number of eggs declines. As egg numbers reduce, the ovaries produce less estrogen.
Menopause is the time in a woman's life when her periods stop as a result of the reduction and loss of ovarian reproductive function.
Ovaries produce the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
When a woman approaches the menopause, less estrogen is produced causing her body to behave differently.
This process is usually a gradual one, that progresses over several years.
