What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural transition marked by 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. Many people experience perimenopause beforehand, when hormones fluctuate and symptoms may begin.

The stages of menopause

Perimenopause

The transition before periods stop completely. Symptoms can include hot flushes, sleep changes, mood shifts, brain fog, vaginal or urinary changes and joint aches. Onset and duration vary.

Menopause

A single point in time: 12 months since the last period. In the UK this is commonly between ages 45 and 55.

Postmenopause

The years after menopause. Some symptoms ease; others, such as vaginal dryness or bone health concerns, can continue and are worth discussing with your healthcare professional.

When to seek support

  • Symptoms affect daily life, work or sleep
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Symptoms begin before age 45
  • You are unsure whether changes are menopause-related
